Four men, including a prison officer and an ex-warder, were held here in connection with a daring daylight prison break, in which two Venezuelans and a St. Lucian escaped from the main Bordelais prison, east of the capital, police confirmed Thursday.
The full identities of the four have not been revealed, but one said to be a correctional officer employed at Bordelais Correctional Facility, and another was a former warder from the east coast village of Dennery, where the prison is located.
Police sources say that so far no charges have been laid and the four individuals were assisting police investigations.
The arrests came as an inquiry into the Sunday August 8 jail break was underway here while the search for the convicts continued.
The three inmates fled from through holes in the three-tier fencing surrounding the prison while three masked accomplices who stood at the southwest perimeter of the compound exchanged gunfire with the prison’s special response team in broad daylight.
The two Venezuelans were both serving four-year prison terms for drugs trafficking while a 22 –year-old St.Lucian was serving a seven-year sentence for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He was also on remand awaiting trial for attempted murder.
